If I want to work in an embassy, but not as part of the military, what should I study in college?

In the future, I want to work in an embassy overseas, but I'm unsure as to what field is best for me to study if I want to do this. I've been looking mostly at environmental science, information science, and computer science for my major in college. Is there another major that is more sought after for individuals wanting to work in embassies? Thanks!

Hi Victoria,

Good that you are very clear about your choice of work. We always end up in a situation which path to choose to achieve our goal. In your case IT is a good option, however there are various other options to choose should you work in embassies. You can choose international studies, foreign service, international culture etc.. but IT is a very niche area and again within that you may have to specialize like Data science, ethical hacking, etc..

Hi Victoria,
I'm excited to hear that you have an interest in international relations, because I had similar interests when I attended college (some time ago). To successfully work abroad, a strong foundation of a foreign language and appreciation for the culture is a start. Other important non-language sills are in the areas of political science, history, statistics and data analytics. With the advancement of technology in the areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning, analyzing data is a valued skillset in all industries.

All the best in your future endeavors,
Noreen

Hi Victoria,
There are a number of majors that could lend themselves to that type of work. The top choices would probably be Political Science, History, International Relations, etc. However, you'll find a lot of people don't end up working in the same field that they majored in. Sometimes it is best to follow your interest and what makes you curious, and work really hard at that. Coming out of college, a lot of hiring managers will consider candidates with majors other than what the job might suggest.
