Linda’s Answer

Cool I make jewelry also, but I have a busy Interior design business that consums most of my time but in the evening or the rare free weekend I indulge and I am always rewarded with beautiful results. I never made jewelry until Covit and my overpowering creative energy ran amuck with ideal hands. Self taught I open a small venture and sold my jewelry by designing a jewelry stand and setup at a good friends sidewalk deli. I had made 150 piece bracelets and necklaces and in 11 days I sold all but 19 pieces. I was stunned and encouraged. I live in Louisiana where there are endless artisan markets and festivals of every possible celebration where I discovered and emerced myself in the world of vendors a lovely and hardy group of artists. I learned how the vendors traveled from markets and festivals and made an impressive amount of money and best of all it was so much fun for me. Here's were you enter the possibles, for starting a business the investment is small and working closely with people who want what you designed is positive energy and gaining knowledge for growing your business appetit. One thing to remember when you are pricing your wares, do not devalue your efforts. Charge a fair price so your are making a profit on your entire investment but don't over charge either or you will not be able to sell what you created. You can always go down on the price but you can never go up . Be very considerate of this it is make or brake. I always say 90% of something is better than 100 % of nothing. I treated my customers as if my little stand was a upscale boutique.I wrapped the jewelry in beautiful colorful tissue paper and sealed it with a sticker for beautiful or inspirational stickers I purchased. If there was a young child or kid I would ask them to choose the appropriate sticker and put the items in paper bags of various types. I made hand written cards with artist then my name and contact info. I explained to my new buyer if the jewelry was damaged by accident or broke I would repair it and placed my in the bag. I loved selling my jewelry this way it was a lot of work but not challenging like new startups. So if you think you are interested in doing something like this search your local commerce office for events. Good luck in deciding your best path.

David’s Answer

Hi, Sophia. Check with your parents, but you can probably start a small business, now if you sign up at etsy, ebay, or amazon, to name a few. My daughter sells on Etsy and other sites but does not rely on the money she receives to earn a living. Rather, she does it as a fun hobby. I suggest that you also continue to go to school. I started my hobby business while I was working full time as an engineer. I worked with another engineer who created hand (pencil) drawing of dogs on her spare time.

So start out, slowly and see how you like running a small business. Maybe you will grow it into something that is much larger.

Bronwyn’s Answer

David has good advice. Starting a business is easy. Running one and looking after your customers is the hard part, but if you love what you do and offer good customer service in a niche market forming sincere relationships with your customers, they will keep you in business. Plan properly and keep record of everything and you will succeed.
