Why do adults always talk about college, knowing that people can succeed without it? ?

I am in the 11th grade. As far as my career exploration, I am more interested in culinary but not too sure about college yet.

I wish more students would ask this important question, as it creates unneeded stress when contemplating life after high school. The best answer I can give is that, for several decades, attending college was considered the only acceptable path after HS if a person wanted a satisfactory career. That message was drummed into our brains when we were teenagers and the memory, unfortunately, remains. Fortunately, in past year or so, many articles have surfaced on that flawed thinking, pointing out that satisfactory (and good income) careers are just as possible with a trade school education, or one achieved through other means, such as the military and on-the-job. The idea is now irrelevant and was never confirmed as the right approach; people just made that assumption. I encourage students to consider what interests them, and then pursue that road.
