Dear John,
As a student who mastered in Earth science course at college, I learned that understanding the physical properties of materials is key to working excellent with them whether in nature or in machining. To cut metal on a lathe, the most efficient method involves using the right cutting tool material (carbide tools are great for most metals), setting the correct spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut based on the metal type, and applying cutting fluid to reduce heat and wear.

Begin by ensuring the machine's bit is nice and sharp. Double-check that it's secure. Also, verify that the item you're about to cut is firmly held in place. Remember to use oil, it's great for both cutting and cooling. Always prioritize safety. If you need to remove the item before it's cool, make sure you're wearing welding gloves or any other type of well-insulated gloves. Once it's safe, cool the part with water. Keep repeating these steps until you're finished.
