What college major does one need to take to become a diagnostic sonographer?

Every time I look at colleges the option of becoming a diagnostic sonographer is not always there. I'm a junior in highschool and unfortunately, I am struggling to find more information in this field and it's really interesting to me and something I would genuinely like to pursue in the future.

Finding the right program can sometimes be a challenge, especially depending on your location. I recall my time in school for Ultrasound 25 years ago, when it was relatively easier to secure a spot and there were plenty of options. If I were to share a crucial piece of advice with anyone contemplating a career in Ultrasound, it would be to ensure beyond a shadow of a doubt that the program or school they choose is accredited. While I think most of them are these days, it's essential to confirm this.

Moreover, I would caution against considering online Ultrasound schools. The hands-on, in-person training is indispensable for mastering the job proficiently. It's quite surprising to me that online schools for this field even exist.

While it's not obligatory to have a Bachelor's degree to land a job in Ultrasound, having one might make your resume more appealing. However, it's not a deal-breaker if you don't have one.

I wish you the best of luck in your search. Even after all these years, I continue to find immense satisfaction in my work. It's a truly fulfilling career.

This website is a fantastic resource for understanding the steps to become a medical sonographer. A close friend of mine initially graduated with a marketing degree, but she soon realized that it wasn't the right fit for her. She decided to return to school and has since been thriving in her new career as an ultrasound technician. For anyone interested in following a similar path, I highly recommend visiting this link: https://www.concorde.edu/blog/how-to-become-a-sonographer.

Hi Camila,

In most cases, you will need to get medical education, either Bachelor's degree or above. You can find a relevant university at first and them email them and ask directly about the major they offer in particular.
All the best
