How to make your music special?
How do you make you music special/different from others? Nowadays everything's already been made and all music sounds the same. How to you keep it original?

Hi Isabella! First off, I trained myself to compose music whereas none of my songs sounded alike. I strictly had to create music that was different, yet amazingly palatable as I would use the exact same chords that most other composers used. The difference is, I would enhance the normal chords by adding extra note voicing to create “my own sound.” I also strongly rely on original concepts created in my mind, such as bass lines and melodies which I hadn’t heard before. On few occasions, some of my songs turned out sounding a bit similar to what was out in the market, but most of the times, that was extremely rare. You can even create your own rhythmic backbeats to accentuate and personalize your music . Wishing you the very best!

Hi there, ok so creating music specially in such a saturated industry as it is today its quite complicated because there is standards that producers must follow in order to sell( we are talking about the mainstream music like pop, rap etc). Now, creating music that naturally comes from your very personal source of inspiration is what makes it unique, and that you create it by dedicating many and many hours of work until you shape yourself. Listening to music in all of its forms its also a great tool to develop curiosity and to get inspired, that will lead to you wanting to go crazy with production tools or even random compositions that you may create, and from that moment everything its under your control. Try and learn as much as you can from old and new methods of production and music composition, so you will always have a solid structure to follow even if your day isn't necessarily the best one to create, keep discipline at all times and eventually you will get to a point in which you will see patterns in your music, and that somehow are the first steps of your own sound.
One last thing, if you goal is to produce and create your very personal and interesting sound never try to aim it towards the taste of the listener, ask for opinions and share your music with people you trust to make progress first, and then if its your desire, change whatever is needed to accommodate your music inside the industry standards.

Hi! In the first place listen to all but all kind of music that exist in the planet, even if you don't like it. Listening to new music is like reading a new book, the more music you've stored in your brain, the more knowledge you've at the time to produce your own music, or someone else music, making different vibes and original sounds. It is a tough thing to answer because I hear at least two different questions here. One is: how do I make music sound special to me? And the other is: How do I make my music special to someone who never heard it before.
But before I answer those two, I would just like briefly to say a little bit about what you said that "Nowadays everything's already been made and all music sounds the same. "
The recipe for a pop hit that you listen on charts is already well established and known and it is out there on teh interwebs. There is an exact amount of how long a verse should be and how many of them before going to prechorus, then to chorus, how long until you get to the bridge and the to chorus again and so on. But, that is just the fact of life. I mean, all shoes look very similar when you think about it. Sole, tongue, laces, lining, heel, etc. They are all the same, am I right? Of course, they are not all the same! They have the same structure, but crocs are way different then regular running shoes with air soles and whatnot. And to continue with the metaphore, crocs are a more recent invention. Which means that there is still room for experiment and expression, even though the structure is well established.
If you want to make it sound special to you, it will require you to make an effort and create a song or a piece that it is outside of your current skill level. By making a progress and learning new ideas, processes or production tricks, the created piece will be much more meaningful to you as you now have a story accompanying the created piece.
If you try and make a musical score about some emotion that you are feeling at the moment, or tell a story that you want to share, now you have emotional content for the musical piece and that will leave an impression not just on you, but on others as well.
Another thing that is important to take into account if you want to make it sound special to others is that you hav to be aware that you can not influence the outcome, in this case, someone liking your song or not. But as you progress and become more skilled in songwriting, production, recording, etc, I promise you that someone will honestly like or even love your music. At first that may not be a lot of people, but if you are persistent in creating and acquiring skill, that number will grow, I am certain of that.

Great question isabella! My advice to you is the same as I would give my younger self if I could. That is to learn as much about Music Theory and Composition as possible. There are many tropes in modern music, especially Pop Music, that a trained ear can pick out. Understanding those common chord progressions, melodies, song structures and production elements can help you to identify what makes so many songs sound the same and avoid doing that in your own work. It is even possible to make "smart" pop music if that is your passion.
Obviously, you can learn more about theory and composition in school. But fortunately, there are many great resources out there for free and YouTube is definitely one of them. One of my favorite YT theory channels that I'd recommend to you is David Bennett Piano. He highlights common chord progressions in pop music and does a great job explaining how to achieve certain sounds/moods with certain chord changes. It's not too academic but does require some base-knowledge about chords, intervals and scales.
