Hi Dallin, thanks for submitting a question! I didn't like high school much either, and I was also very excited for college. My advice is that when you get to campus, get involved! Most colleges have involvement fairs to find clubs you're interested in. They should have one in the fall right when you arrive to campus. If not, talk to an adviser at the college to help learn more about the different clubs and activities on campus. Be open minded about friends and opportunities when you get there and have fun, but make sure you're finding a balance of fun and focusing on your studies.

The one other piece of advice I'd give is that adjusting to college is difficult; it's a new lifestyle, you're away from family, your old friends, and you're figuring out how to study for college classes. I would try and take a mixture of difficult and lighter courses your first semester; make sure not to overwhelm yourself with your involvement on campus, your new friends, and your studies. To help figure out a good balance, reach out to your future college, ask to talk to a student ambassador or adviser to help figure out how many classes and which classes to take. If the classes are fine, but your involvement on campus is too much, communicate that to them and I'm sure the club will understand. Studies come first, but fun is definitely needed!

I hope this helps and best of luck to you!

I want to echo Taylor's point and recommend to get involved as early as possible. It is great to strike a balance between academics and social events. Joining clubs or organizations can bring you a sense of family that acts as a support system throughout your time at your university. Gaining leadership roles in these organizations can help you feel purpose and feel more connected to your fellow students as well.

I also recommend to learn about the resources your university offers (i.e. tutoring department, writing center, counseling and psychological support), and leverage these resources if necessary to bring about success. The students I have seen enjoy college the most are the one who know how to seek help early when necessary.

At the end of the day, find something that makes you happy and pursue that. It may be very different than what you did or were interested in during high school, and that is completely fine. College is about learning who you are and what makes you happy. Be unabashedly yourself throughout your experience and your friends will cherish you for who you are.
