On the internet there are all sorts of organizations and websites that have opportunities for the next generation of writers.
I was part of one that published a quarterly poetry anthology book, featured online the poetry of its members, and had contests for its membership.
So, the writing online websites and market is a good place to start.

There are several organizations that offer contest throughout the year, it is just a matter of finding one that serves your purpose. If you are just starting out I would recommend searching contest with no admission or administration fee. Again, depending on your goals keep in mind those contests that offer a sizable prize will also charge a modest fee to compete. It would also be a good idea to check the history of a contest to assure its legitimacy. In the meantime keep writing!

I've learned that there is all different kinds of writing, not just creative fiction.
I worked for a website doing film reviews for about 5 years. I got real good at it, and got to see a lot of free movies!
