Hello Emma,

Feeling unsure or overwhelmed about your career path is completely normal. However, there are several proactive steps you can take to discover your interests, skills, and passions and pinpoint potential career opportunities, particularly in the trades.

1. Start with Self-Assessment: Reflect on your strengths, interests, values, and goals. Think about the activities you love, the subjects you're good at, and what drives you. Utilize online career assessment tools, personality tests, and self-assessment exercises to help identify potential career paths that match your preferences.

2. Investigate Trades: Delve into various trade industries to better understand the opportunities they offer. Look into different trades such as being an electrician, plumber, carpenter, HVAC technician, welder, or automotive technician. Understand the skills, qualifications, training requirements, job duties, salary prospects, and growth potential each trade offers.

3. Conduct Informational Interviews: Connect with professionals in trades that pique your interest and request informational interviews. This gives you a chance to learn directly from their experiences, daily tasks, challenges, and rewards in their respective fields. Networking with these professionals can also help you build connections and gain valuable insights into potential career paths.

4. Engage in Apprenticeships and Internships: Consider joining apprenticeship programs or internships to gain practical experience in trades. Apprenticeships offer a learn-and-earn model, combining practical training with classroom instruction. Internships provide a glimpse into different aspects of a trade, helping you evaluate if it aligns with your interests and skills.

5. Discover Training Programs: Research vocational schools, community colleges, and trade-specific training programs near you. Look for programs that offer comprehensive training, practical experience, and industry certifications or credentials. Compare the curriculum, duration, cost, and job placement rates of different programs to find the best fit for your career goals and preferences.

6. Seek Advice: Don't hesitate to seek advice from career counselors, mentors, teachers, or trusted advisors. They can provide valuable guidance, resources, and support to help you navigate your career exploration journey and make informed decisions about your future.

7. Experiment with Different Paths: Keep an open mind and be willing to explore various options. Leverage volunteer opportunities, part-time jobs, or short-term projects in different trades to gain exposure and discover what truly appeals to you.

Remember, identifying the right career path requires time, exploration, and self-discovery. Believe in your abilities, stay active in your search, and remain adaptable as you journey towards a rewarding career in the trades.

Hi Emma

Great question. And you started your journey to learn about career by asking this simple question - where to start.

Some techniques to find out the best combination between "what you want" and "what career will give more rewards".

There can be several ways to explore your career choices, I am providing a simple one that worked for me.
* First - write down a list of subjects that you like
* Do some Google, and write down possible careers along the chosen subjects / trades
* Find out about the licensing or education requirements
* For each such career choice, again Google and find out general market salary rates
* Think and answer how soon you want your career to begin and how much more education or learning you need to do to start the career
* Talk to few people who are already working in your targeted career pathways and ask about their experiences
* Put all the information together and then review everything together
* Identify and find someone who can agree to be your mentor in the selected career journey
* Read up latest information related to your targeted industry, career, and geography to better understand the opportunities and challenges

Now, I understand this is very general information. If you can send your specific questions about a career pathway, you and I together do some analysis to understand the details on developing your career along the targeted pathways.

Do not hesitate to reach out again to me or other people for more information until you have a solid plan :)
All the best.

Just like you, I too experienced similar feelings when I was younger. I hopped from one company to another, tackling various odd jobs until I finally found a place where I truly enjoyed my work. I'm thrilled to share that I've discovered my career path. My first piece of advice for you is to take a moment and reflect on your personal values, your passions, and your future aspirations. A job isn't just about the title, it's about finding a role that complements your personal life. It's crucial to find a job that offers a healthy work-life balance to prevent burnout and frustration. Remember, there's no rush - take your time and relish the journey.

Volunteering, connect with like minded professionals in a number of industries where you think it may ignite a passion or spark and dont be afraid to experiment. Not knowing which career path to follow is more honest than being focused on the one thing
