Hi Nolan W. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.

Admittedly, I was not a student -athlete while I was in college. I did have a pretty demanding schedule. For my peers who were student-athletes, I remember being in absolute awe of them. My question was always how are they carrying the load of these engineering courses AND playing football or basketball or running track IN COLLEGE??. The one common theme that I saw in them, their level of focus. When it was time to focus on their studies, they were laser focused. When it was time to practice or have their head on the field, they were laser focused. And they made time to enjoy the campus life around them.

In my case, I generally kept a routine. My homework/study time was generally the same each day(in the evenings between 5 and 8pm) and where possible, I tried to do a little extra studying because those exams/quizzes can come pretty fast :).

Hope you find this answer helpful and best of luck to you!

I was also a student-athlete, and my social life was the sport. Academics have to come first- your athletic counselor will help you select classes, enroll in them, and plan your study time while accommodating your athletic practice requirements. You might end up taking early morning and evening classes for a while if you are training in the afternoon. You will be spending time with your teammates (who are hopefully your friends too) in class and at practice, and they will be as busy as you are. You guys can work around your schedules and balance academics with a responsible social life. If you are a dedicated student-athlete, your socializing is probably not going to follow the traditional college outlook of late to bed late to rise, but you will find other people you can spend time with that feel the same way you do.
