Physical Therapist

I'm interested in being a Physical Therapist and what A day in the life of a Physical Therapist is like. So far I know that you rehabilitate patients but I would also like to know more about what you do on an everyday basis.

Hey Coogie

Great Question. I have been a physical therapist for 8 yrs and have worked with people in various settings. Physical therapists work with people at the hospital, rehab facilities, outpatient clinics, and at their homes. We can help people with many different problems from spinal cord injuries to ankle sprains. On daily basis physical therapists are mostly working with pt's to help improve their function and reduce pain. That would include teaching exercise, doing manual therapy, educating people about lifestyle changes etc.. We also have to do a fair bit of documentation to have a record of how people are progressing and what types treatments we are doing with them. As a physical therapist you also may have to collaborate with doctors, nurses, and other health care practitioners. If you have some down time you might spend some time learning new techniques and reading new research. If you happen to own your own clinic then you would also be responsible for everything that comes with running a business. Things like marketing, operations, staff management. I hope this answer helps let me know if you have any more questions

Thanks

Colbie

One great thing you could do is go to a local physical therapy clinic and see if you can shadow a PT for a day.

Aaron’s Answer

Hello, I am not a physical therapist but I have hundreds of observation hours under a physical therapist. He worked in a small outpatient clinic with a rapidly growing group of clients. Aside from the obvious treatment procedures, the little things in between play a big part. A large portion of his time was spent having conversations with clients, this is mainly to understand their daily activities and motivations, which are key factors in determining a treatment method that works best for them. Other than that it is mostly paperwork and cleanup.
