Consultancy and Engineering Design

I'm currently studying mechanical engineering and after a few internships, I realized that most engineers really don't really get design say. I've looked online and it seems that there exist mechanical engineering consultancy firms of varying specialization, ranging from general engineering to specific focus areas, all seemingly doing the design work exported from a contracting customer. I'm curious if someone in mechanical consulting, or who has worked with such firms could tell me what kind of work consultancy firms get (if it is significantly different from work you would do in a non-consulting company), why a company would have another company design its products, and what kind of experience is necessary to work in such a firm. Is the design work commissioned concept generation, design for production, or designing manufacturing repairs/liaison engineering, as the term "design" seems quite nebulous. #Engineering #Consult #Mechanical Engineering #Engineering Design
