How do nurses who experienced caregiving or loss at a young age let those experiences shape the way they care for patients, and how do they stay emotionally strong without becoming overwhelmed? #Spring26

I’m 25 and pursuing a vocational program to become an LVN. My path into nursing was shaped by taking on caregiving responsibilities early in life and experiencing loss, which showed me how important compassionate care is. I’m interested in patient care and want to learn how nurses handle the emotional demands of the job while continuing to show up for their patients.

As a nurse or any healthcare professional, is it bittersweet when patients you've built good relationships with get better and leave, knowing you probably won't ever see them again? If so, how do you deal with it?

On a hospital tour with my high school's health science department, one of the nurses leading the tour said it was bittersweet to watch patients go. Is this something I should be concerned about experiencing as an aspiring nurse?

Does the value of saving lives outweigh the emotional burden of losing patients on a daily basis?

I am a high school senior currently enrolled to be a freshman at Boston College this fall. I interned at a hospital this summer, and saw the tragedies of the healthcare field. I am still interested in becoming a surgeon, but realize the emotional and physical toll it can have and wanted advice from someone in the field.

Do I have to be a people person to work as a doctor?

I'm a pretty good "people" person, but I do struggle with understanding and dealing with people's actions and emotions. I know nurses deal with patients for the most amount of time, but I don't want my lack of social skills to affect the patient in a negative way. #doctor #patient-care
