Can I make a living in majoring in dance?

My passion is dance its my whole life. It’s how I’m able to express myself to people without actually having to talk. I want to major in dance so much but my family says it’s unrealistic and I’ll have no future. What should I do?? #dance

Without having to discourage you, here are my thoughts. Dancing is fun if it's just followed as a passion and done for fun but I would not recommend doing it for a living. It's a tough space to be in. While I say this, I would not deny the fact that some people have made careers out of it and made a really great living out of it. If this is really your passion and have no other option and want to only make a living out of it, have patience, keep working hard and you should be able to make a decent living. BUT it's tough and this requires years and years of practice and patience as making money of it the moment you want would not be a possibility.

Victoria’s Answer

Hi Lethicia,

The arts are such an important part of our culture and it is so fabulous to find majors and fields that you are passionate about. One possible thing you could consider is a double major with Dance and Business or Dance and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). There are so many opportunities in both business and STEM in combination with the arts. You could teach dance, run your own studio, work for a major dance company, work in sports medicine, design apps for choreographers, so many possibilities! By double majoring you are doubly valuable to dance, the arts, and your community. It also gives you the flexibility and the skill sets to pursue multiple careers and opportunities.

I work with many people in technology who are also artists: writers, visual/graphics artists, painters, craftsmen, and dancers. I have worked with many people in the sciences who combine their love of dance and the performing arts as a professional level with pediatrics, physical therapy, the sciences, coaching, and entrepreneurship. You will have amazing opportunities with a double major. Check out the links below.

This is a very exciting time to be in the arts. STEM or STEAM - the "A" is for arts) and business give you other critical skills to maximize your potential as a dancer and to grow your career now and in the future.

Victoria recommends the following next steps:

Read the suggestions below. Keep a journal of careers and majors that sound interesting to you and let us know what you decide. The dance world is very lucky to have you.
