What is the process for maintaining your certifications?
I know that you need certain certifications to be an electrician, how do you go about keeping them up to date?

Hey there,
Now, Keeping your electrician certifications up to date isn’t as complicated as rewiring a breaker panel—but yeah, it does take some effort.
First off, once you get your license (cue the celebration dance), you usually need to renew it every couple of years. Each state’s a little different, but most of the time, you’ll need to complete some continuing education (CE) hours. That’s just a fancy way of saying you’ve gotta take a few classes to stay sharp on new codes, safety rules, and any fresh tech hitting the industry.
These classes aren’t as boring as they sound—think of them as your backstage pass to all the latest electrical tricks. You can usually find them online (hello, couch learning) or in-person if you’re feeling social.
When renewal time rolls around, you fill out some paperwork, pay a fee (because of course), and boom—you’re good to keep zapping away legally.
I would totally suggest to you to not wait until the last minute—nobody wants a license scramble. Stay ahead of the game, and you’ll be shocking the world (safely) for years to come. All the best!

Hey There!
This is not a one answer fits all question because each state/county has different requirements. Personally, I have four licenses, and I have three different processes for four of those licenses.
1) NICET Fire Alarm License - This particular license requires 90 points of "retraining" every three years in order for you to keep your license, and you can only obtain 72 points from doing work in your career. This leaves 18 points that you need to either take classes, teach classes, retake the test, etc.
2) Washington DC Journeyman's - This license like another of my licenses is as simple as renewing your driver's license. Every 3 years they will send me an email, and I will pay $XX.XX to keep my license up to date. Simple, love it!
3) State License DC Journeyman's - This particular license of mine requires me to go to the Code Classes that teach you everything that is being changed or added to the National Electric Code.
Look at your license, and learn what is required... this way when it comes close to the expiration date you are not rushing to renew your license. Learn by my mistakes, you do NOT want to pay reinstatement fees.

It can vary, but most states require updating the license every two years, all this requires is 16 hours of continuing ed courses online and a application fee.
