what are the steps a person must take to become a principal of a school?

I am a sophomore trying to discover new careers. Do you have to be a teacher for a certain amount of years or can you just go on an interview for the job? #education #jobs #principal #steps

It all depends on the school you are applying to but I would not be interested in leading a school that did not expect its Principal to have teaching experience. Teaching is one of the hardest professions, image trying to keep 30 twelve year olds engaged in academic work that they are not really interested in while the room is filled with their peers some of who are trying to take the wind out of your sails. Yes, it is important to have teaching experience before you have to be the person to lead a staff of young people who are insecure about what they are doing, older teachers who are thinking that you have a lot of nerve trying to tell them what to do when you have no practical expereince yourself. School Prinicpals have many masters to please: teachers, students, parents, district offices, city government, state government and in the case of public schools maybe the rules and regulations of five different unions.

Eric’s Answer

Hi Deja. Many school principals have a college degree in education in addition to a Masters degree in education or administrative management. School principals also have experience in teaching as well. So the role of a principal is to educate students as well as manage educational resources (teachers, curriculum, after-school programs, etc) for the school they oversee. Hope this helps and good luck.
