What are a few good summer jobs for a college undergrad who is eventually looking into becoming a pediatric OT?
I am a college freshman looking for a summer job that doesn't require any prior experience. I am on the pre-OT track and trying to get more experience before entering the healthcare field or working with children in general.

I worked in day care centers and after school programs while I was an undergrad and it gave me good pediatric experience. It is important to understand typical development and have a comfortable working relationship focused on building trust and a safe relationship to work in pediatric OT.

Well what I recommend for you is working at a summer camp for people with special needs if you want some experience with working different populations. During two of my summers in undergrad, I worked at a special needs summer camp called Camp Courageous in Monticello, Iowa as a camp counselor. Especially if you love the outdoors and not afraid to leave home or your state. I’m from Georgia and I flew up there to work there for 3 months (and driven up there from Georgia my second summer). I had to most fun during my summer breaks there. You get to live on the camp grounds in their dorms. You get campers every week from Sunday afternoon until Friday morning. Each week is different. One- two weeks are for adult population, 3 weeks for children, 1 week for muscular dystrophy association, 1 week for blind people, 1 week for complex physical disabilities, and 1 week for traumatic brain injuries. If you have no experience but love the outdoors or helping people then you would be fine. They spend the first week training everyone. During training, they teach you how to care for people with disabilities (wheelchair management, transfers, use of hoyer lift, and how to work a power wheelchair). They allow you to try every single activity that your camper would like to do on camp grounds and learn how to prepare them for it with harnesses. That includes tree climbing (even for people in wheelchairs), canoeing, bowling, nature trail, horse riding, zip lining, arts and crafts, cooking over a fire, and camping. During my time there, we would cook over a fire at different camp sites that we choose on Sunday. One day during the week is dedicated to actually camping on the camp grounds (wear layers cause it’s still cold sleeping outside during the summer). At the beginning of the week, you get 6-7 campers in your group with two other camp counselors. They get to pick what activities they want to do as a group on Sunday night. Camp counselors have to rush to each activity station to put their group name on each activity that they want. And we follow that schedule we created for the week. It was so much fun and I enjoyed my experience if you would want something fun rather than just regular CNA experience at a nursing home. A lot of the friends I made there became nurses, speech pathologists, physical therapist, occupational therapists, and recreational therapists. The pay is great. They feed you three meals during the week. You make friends to either go grocery shopping for the weekend or hang out with. But you should apply now. https://campcourageous.org/
