What are jobs other than an Interior Designer can I choose with that degree?

I'm a senior in high school and I am going to major in interior design, what are jobs other than an interior designer can I choose with that degree? Like theatre set design, or maybe helping with big event layouts?

Hi Emily,
In school, you will be exposed to and learn about so many different opportunities: maybe you'll end up loving Auto CAD and you'll want to do nothing but renderings for a design firm; or, maybe you'll become passionate about the process of hand-making tile and you'll start your own tile company. Furniture design. Color consultant. Editor of a shelter magazine. It's endless. If you think you like interior design, go for it and remain open to all the design-related businesses, products and services you will be exposed to on your path. Best of luck!

Katherine’s Answer

Hi Emily! There are so many different avenues you can take. First, identify your true interests. Then look at opportunities in design related fields. Lighting design, set design, high concept event planning are all wonderful fields. Also, don't rule out sales. If you're a people person, there are opportunities to work in showrooms, or working as a rep for fabric, floor coverings, specialty finishes and materials, furniture or lighting. There are so many amazing products out there and there are craftsmen doing wonderful things. Once you have some chops under your belt, you can become an independent rep and have your own stable of suppliers. That can be quite lucrative. When you're in college, do as many internships as you can. Not only does it look great on your resume, but it gives you the time to explore and dabble in various parts of the industry. It will help crystallize for you, where your passion and talent lies.
