Hi Emily, the balance it´s very important, I think you can make it. It´s important to choose your priorities first, and then you can add the hours that you need in these three options. For example, if you want to play any sport, you can start gradually, for example two or three hours a week. And combine it with your school and work time. It´s important to be patient and another think maybe can help you is having an agenda. But it is possible. Go for it!

Hi Emily, I'm an Electronic Engineer that works as Validation/Verification Manager at Synopsys (a software company) but my passion has always been basketball. When I was little, I couldn't exercise because I had sinusitis, but I was very interested in sports like soccer and basketball. Eventually, my parents gave up on keeping me from playing sports, and when I was about 12, I discovered basketball because my classmates invited me to play. I was the youngest in the group, but I loved the dynamics, and I think that influenced all the decisions I made in my life. First, I transferred to another school in my city that was good at basketball but also good academically, where I did well and was able to improve both as a basketball player and as a student. I always knew I had to be responsible with my studies since I didn't know if I could dedicate myself to basketball (especially because of my height). I ended up being the best player in my graduating class (and probably one of the best in recent decades). Then, when it came time to enter university, I also chose one of the best in Chile for basketball, but also one of the best for Engineering (since I liked math and technology). So, in 2004, I enrolled in Electronic Engineering at the University of Concepción. I admit that it was also difficult to manage the time dedicated to training, traveling, playing, studying, and spending time with friends and family, but I managed. I finally fulfilled my dream of being a professional player for a few years (I extended the year I was supposed to graduate, but I don't regret it). I won the national university championship three times here in Chile with my team. My university years were wonderful; in fact, I didn't want to work and wanted to continue enjoying university and basketball. Eventually, I suffered a knee injury that forced me to finish university and look for a job. So, when I was looking for work again, thinking about how I could continue playing in some way, that's when I found Synopsys. The work is very flexible (since I work from a computer), and I was able to continue playing in my free time. I currently play for a team in the Chilean second division, and at the same time, I continue to strive for professional growth. I'm 40 years old and the oldest player on the team, but I take it with great pride, and I always say that where there's a will, there's a way—it all depends on you. My main advice: define what matters most to you. There may be times when you prioritize some things over others, but your ultimate focus shouldn't change much, so fight for it. Many good things will happen as a result of being disciplined, fighting for your dreams, and accepting the difficulties that will inevitably arise.
