How do you know you're ready for the next big step?

I am a sophomore in a junior college, transferring into a four-year. I want to become veterinarian, but I don't know if I am prepared to commit down that carrer path yet. Any advice?

Heather’s Answer

Hi, Bree! I totally recommend doing some informational interviews with folks who are in the veterinary field. Not just veterinarians but techs or other adjacent roles. What I've learned over time is sometimes we like the idea of something but it's not the whole thing we really want. In this case, if you really like animals you might find that actually caring for sick animals isn't something you love and you'd be better suited for caring for animals in some other way. Spend some time thinking about what pieces of being a veterinarian speak to you and talk to folks who are doing the work. If you can get in and job shadow someone that's also a great option. Your school might have connections to places and people who are willing to chat with you and help you explore more if this is the path you want to take.

Also, don't be afraid if you commit and find you want to change your mind at some point. I have made so many pivots in my career across retail/restaurant, construction, non-profit, banking, and tech. If you change your mind you can change your career. The lessons you learn and the wisdom you gain through all of your experiences are what can take you into something new if you decide you want to shift.

Best of luck to you!

I agree with Heather's answer. Here’s steps you can take to learn more about your current career interest - volunteer, get a part-time job, or interview someone, this will help you understand all parts of that career.

If you have time, join clubs or take elective classes outside your current major or career path. This way, you can explore other interests without delaying graduation. It will either confirm your career choice or show you if there's something else you want to explore further.
