Hi Sophia! Your specialty should be based on your interests and what motivates you to help others. The best part about this profession is that if you start in a certain setting and you don't like it after all, become bored, or find something else interesting that you can change or do both! I've been an OT for 3 years and I've worked jobs with both older adults and preschoolers in special education, and I love both! If you're not sure where to start or are curious about what else is out there, I would recommend reaching out to local OTs/companies in different settings that seem interesting and ask if you can come in to shadow or observe for a day or two, just to see what it's like and to ask questions.

Many will choose an emphasis after you graduate and find work. I assume that you have some interest that drew you to the field of occupational therapy - follow what interests you now. You may find that your passion grows and you may find other aspects that interest you along the way. Follow your passions and bring enthusiasm to your studies and your clients. As you work and grow, you will develop your own niche.

Hello! So glad that you're interested in OT. If I understood correctly you are a freshman in undergrad. Finishing your undergrad degree and then finishing your masters in OT will be at least another 6 years from now. I would not worry about choosing a specialty at this time. Things change. Thoughts/feelings about a particular topic or area change. Trends change. Etc etc. If I were you I would spend my undergrad time preparing to be the best OT Masters Degree candidate so I could be to get into my preferred program. Then once in the program work with your professors or counselors to explore as much as possible to see what you like or don't like. Best of luck to you
