How can you make yourself stand out on resumes and/or applications from the millions of others out there?

With so many people applying for the limited number of spots available, what would make an application stand out from the masses. Or, what should one not do on an application?

Standing out can be tough. Start with some basic steps: check and double-check your spelling and grammar. This is a simple way to avoid having your application dismissed. Begin your resume with a strong summary or profile.

A good summary should highlight a few skills related to the job, what you can offer, and how you can benefit the company. Use "I" statements and avoid buzzwords. A strong summary keeps the reviewer interested. Look at the job description and make sure you include some of the skills they mention. Good luck!

You should look into the company to learn about its mission and values. Include your "why" statement in your resume summary to shine among other candidates. In your resume, could you show how you can add value to their organization by matching your strengths with the job description? It's your "why" that makes you unique and stand out from other candidates.

Hi, Nixon -

Good question! How to differentiate from all other applicants is hard. You'll need to be very thoughtful in how you apply and think through questions and requested qualities very carefully before committing to your message.

When I see the volume of applicants for jobs multiply in a matter of hours, I presume that they have one resume that they use for every job. That's no way to succeed; they won't stand out. Crafting an application that mirrors what the employer wants will go a long way to getting past the AI screener and getting to the appropriate decision maker.

Good luck- it's a tough job market.
