How have alumni from your college helped you begin or grow your career?

I’m narrowing my decision of colleges and wondering how much support I can expect when I’m done with my studies.

Jason’s Answer

Hey Robbie,

It really varies by the school. Different schools are targeted by different companies for hiring new grads. In many cases those schools have strong pipelines to those companies because of strong alumni ties especially as you get into the higher levels of management. My school was a non target for the program I went through after undergrad so I didn't have much alum help. However I try my best to give back when and how I can.

Doc’s Answer

Yes Robbie, many universities offer career coaching services for their graduates. These services can include mock interviews, job search strategies, and career exploration resources. Some colleges may also have career centers that offer individual counseling and mentorship programs:
• CAREER CENTERS: Many colleges and universities have dedicated career centers that provide a variety of resources and services to help students and graduates find employment. These centers often offer workshops, seminars, and individual appointments with career counselors.
• INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING: Career counselors can help graduates explore different career paths, identify their skills and interests, and develop a job search strategy. They can also provide feedback on resumes, cover letters, and interview skills.
• MENTORSHIP PROGRAMS: Some colleges offer mentorship programs that pair graduates with professionals in their field of interest. These programs can provide valuable networking opportunities and career guidance.
• ALUMNI SERVICES: Some colleges extend their career services to alumni, offering continued support after graduation, such as career counseling, resume workshops, and access to job boards.
• PERSONALIZED COACHING: Some colleges offer one-on-one career coaching, helping graduates identify their career goals, develop their skills, and prepare for the job market.
• NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES: Colleges often organize events and workshops to help graduates connect with alumni, industry professionals, and potential employers.
• ONLINE RESOURCES: Many colleges also provide online platforms and resources, such as Handshake, where graduates can find job postings, connect with career coaches, and access other career-related information.

CONCLUSION
Robbie make sure to checkout the college's website for information on career services or alumni resources. Also, reach out to the college's career center directly to inquire about available services for graduates. Lastly, search for the college on LinkedIn to see if they have an alumni group or career services page.
