Hi, there is no set way to maximize opportunities for potential internships and jobs but I have listed some of my top ideas below:
1. Maintain a relationship with and regularly collaborate with counselors at school. They can help identify potential internship opportunities and can make sure that your major, minor, clubs etc. line up with your professional interests.
2. Attend professor office hours and be active in classes. Your professors will have plenty of professional experience and could potentially help write recommendations or refer you to a potential opportunity.
3. Join school extracurriculars (clubs, sports team, etc.) to meet other like minded students and to expand your interests.
4. Create a linkedin profile and begin building connections with students, professors, and potential employers of interest. Update your profile with major school achievements to show growth and areas of expertise
Hope this helps!

Hello,
As a civil engineering major at UMD, you have amazing resources at your fingertips. The University Career Center is there to help with resume reviews, mock interviews, and career fairs, all designed to prepare you for internships and jobs. Don’t miss out on networking events hosted by organizations like the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) to meet professionals in the field. By joining student clubs, forming study groups, and applying early for internships, co-op programs, and volunteer roles, you’ll gain valuable hands-on experience. Focus on building your skills in software like AutoCAD and MATLAB, while also boosting important soft skills like communication and leadership to stand out.
Remember, every experience, whether it’s a class project, a research assistantship, or an engineering competition, is a chance to learn, grow, and connect. These are the steps that will help you build confidence and expertise in your field. Keep your LinkedIn profile and online portfolio updated to showcase your achievements and connect with UMD alumni. Stay curious and motivated, knowing that growth takes time. The journey may have challenges, but with persistence, resilience, and a positive attitude, you’ll make great strides toward amazing internships and job opportunities in civil engineering. Keep moving forward. Best of luck!
