Paul’s Answer

I think the most difficult thing for me, was trying to find the balance between academics and athletics.

Back, when I competed, there were not as many resources, as there are now.

Many colleges have established academic systems, within their athletic departments, to help the student athletes find the correct balance.

Many now have academic advisors, to help the athletes set up courses, which will not conflict with practice times or competitions.

They also have academic assistance and tutoring programs, to help the athletes in their courses, so they can maintain eligibility requirements, and setting up make-up exams with college professors.

So, I would look to the athletic department, to see if there are resources like this, for you to utilize.

Karin’s Answer

Hi Catherine,

I would say the hardest part is the time commitment. Managing your time wisely and communicating well with your professors about missed lectures and deadlines will be really important for your success. Hopefully, your team supports your academic success as much as they support your athletic success. It can be done, as many student athletes have done it before you.

You'll miss out on certain experiences of college life, and need to have the discipline to stick to your schedule. But if you love your sport it will all be worth it.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!
