What is one thing you wish you knew before choosing your college major, how do you think it would have changed your decision?
I want to be a corporate lawyer, but have also thought about being a pediatrician. I am passionate about both and cannot decide which route is best. #Spring25

Hi Gretchen! Those are both amazing and fulfilling career paths! I was in a similar position during my undergrad, torn between the medical and legal fields. I chose law and now I'm a practicing attorney in NY. I found science classes, especially organic chemistry, challenging, which led me to switch to political science. If you can, try taking classes in both areas during your first year. I took science prerequisites and a critical thinking writing course, which introduced me to the basics of law. By taking two semesters in both fields, I was able to make my decision by sophomore year. Joining pre-law and pre-med organizations on campus was incredibly helpful, as it allowed me to meet local professionals and explore both careers deeply. I naturally leaned towards one path and never regretted it! Take your time to explore and keep an open mind. Best of luck!

Hi Gretchen, choosing a major can be a hard decision! In many cases, a lot of your first year classes may fill pre-reqs that all first years have to take regardless of the chosen major. If that's the case, you may have a little more time to decide. During that time, I'd recommend seeking out some older students or working professionals to talk with in the fields you're interested in (law, pediatrician). You could also look for an internship or volunteer opportunity in a field to help give you a little more insight into what it could be like. I hope that helps and best of luck to you on your journey!

Hi Gretchen! I'm currently a corporate law and I absolutely understand your predicament. My advice on this would be take some time to try and get some internship opportunities in these fields just to have a idea of the day to day that would be expected from you. When I chose to study law, I wish I got enough exposure to the job - I initially started my journey as a litigator, but after 5 years decided that being a corporate lawyer was more of my calling. So I'd say if you want a more clearer idea, getting experience would be imperative. Give it a try, and perhaps you'll learn exactly what you want!
