How highly would you say creative thinking is valued in the technological workplace?
As an aspiring UI designer, I would like a professional’s take on uncommon skills that stand out to interviewers—beyond strength in logic and proficiency in coding languages. Is creative thinking a skill that makes an applicant seem well-rounded? Thank you for your time!

Hi Emma, great question!
Creative thinking is highly valued in tech jobs, especially in UI design where you blend user experience, looks, and problem-solving. While you need to know the technical stuff and think logically, creativity makes you stand out in interviews and at work.
In tech, creativity isn’t just about how things look. It’s about finding new solutions, working with limits, and spotting chances where others see problems. For a UI designer, this could mean rethinking how users use a product, trying new layout ideas, or adding small animations that make things easier to use.
So yes, this skill not only makes you well-rounded but also a top pick for teams that focus on innovation and user-friendly design! :)

UI is just as important as UX within successful app development. I absolutely love the UI side of product and tech. Being able to articulate your UI based on user feedback and real world design principals is key. Working within a complex cybersecurity space, the UI is not as "fun" as many other types of products. However, it is still important for me as the only designer on the team to amplify the UI to make the users feel comfortable with a new tool they may be apprehensive to use. Creativity is a huge part of UXUI design. Be bold. Be exploratory! Your creative ideas will land in the right spots and impact real users with real problems.

The other answers here are excellent! Another thing to think about is that companies often want to refresh their image, so branding is really important. Ensuring that branding can be easily updated is a big task! There are also accessibility needs for people who are color blind or even totally blind. Finding creative ways to improve their experiences can be a rewarding challenge. Humanity's strength lies in adaptability, and creativity is at the heart of that.
Not all companies will value this equally, though. Take some time to research a company and connect with alumni on LinkedIn or other platforms to get their insights!
