Rhoda’s Answer

Hi Anna,

What kind of art are you doing? Is it fine art, like painting and drawing, or design, like interior and graphic design? No matter which one it is, you can try these steps:

1. Attend as many competitions as you can.
2. Talk to your professors and ask for their advice.
3. Look for student art clubs, join one, and try to be active. Aim to become a board member.
4. Check if any school or public art galleries can showcase your artwork.
5. Visit small art galleries and try to talk to the artists.

You can start with these ideas.

Rhoda recommends the following next steps:

collect your artworks and put it together.
Do research on competition you can attend, both local and national competition.
Apply and submit. You might have a chance not getting anything back but you could learn as you go.

You'll have both education and art courses. For your art classes, stick to the guidelines, communicate with your professors, and avoid rushing your projects at the last minute. As an art educator, explore different media and learn about both 2D and 3D art. Gain teaching experience through activities like paint and sip sessions, which can cater to both kids and adults. This will help you decide whether to focus on elementary or secondary art education. Aim for high-quality work because even though you're an art education major, you'll be alongside art majors in studio classes. To make your portfolio shine, you need to be an artist first. Show your work, highlight your style, and stay focused. When I was a freshman, I studied visual communications, earned a BFA in studio art, and discovered my passion for education while pursuing my master's.
