What can my life in college, outside of the classroom, teach me about myself and my future? #Spring25?

I look forward to the classes I will take in college, but what else will I take away from my college experience, outside of the classroom, that will benefit me for years to come?

University life not only prepares you for possible real-life scenarios, it also allows you to meet future professionals with similar or different interests who can provide new perspectives on your life or career.
Support and social connections are extremely important as a support and consultation network.

Hi Richard!

As part of your college experience, I would suggest you to join clubs, organise events, or just talking to people from different backgrounds to help you discover your strengths and weaknesses. You’ll find out if you like leading, solving problems, or working behind the scenes. These experiences also teach you how to manage your time, deal with setbacks, and stay motivated when things get tough.

Taking on internships or joining extra-curricular activities is also one of the best ways to explore career paths and build a professional network early. You’ll meet mentors, teammates, and maybe even future employers.

As a fresh grad myself, I took on multiple internships during undergrad to know what I'm passionate about, the industries that I am interested in and it helped to shape my skills that is applicable to my current job. I also joined a Business Analytics interest group in my university to connect with like-minded individuals and I learnt that many of such interest groups offer exclusive learning opportunities, competitions, and networking events which are highly beneficial for your career portfolio.

Quick tip: Apply for internships where you'll be able to pick up a new software/knowledge. This is highly relevant in our everchanging IT driven world.

College offers more than just academics; it's a chance to grow and learn from diverse experiences. Don't just stick with students in your major—branch out and meet people from different fields. This will broaden your perspective and enrich your experiences. Say "yes" to opportunities, especially social events and activities in clubs and organizations. Even if you're nervous, participating can boost your confidence and independence. Also, seek internships and jobs to explore your career interests. Real-world experience, like an internship, can provide valuable insights into your future career path, often more than coursework alone.
