What are some general college tips?

What are some job opportunities near NYU? I was wondering if it's competitive to just find any kind of job nearby especially because I don't have a lot of experience. As an incoming NYU freshman I was wondering if appealing aid helps at all. Also, what are the best classes to take as a liberal studies core student, I'm not planning to stay for global studies so I was wondering what the best course of action would be.

Hey Sophy!

Congrats on getting into NYU! Thats amazing. Now lemme just say, Yes, appealing financial aid can help! If your financial situation has changed or if you believe there’s been an error in your aid package, it’s always worth reaching out to the financial aid office. Sometimes, they can adjust your award based on new information, so don’t hesitate to ask.

So, now, finding a job in NYC can be competitive, but don't worry too much, there is always plenty of part-time job opportunities around NYU, even for those without a lot of experience. Consider looking for jobs in cafes, retail stores, tutoring, or even on-campus positions. These often don’t require extensive experience and are a great way to get started. Check out job boards like NYU's own, as well as sites like Indeed, Glassdoor, and even Craigslist for listings near the campus.

Since you're not planning to stay for global studies, focus on courses that align with your personal interests and goals. As a liberal studies student, you'll likely have flexibility in your curriculum, so consider classes that complement your strengths or explore new subjects that intrigue you. You might want to look for classes in areas like writing, communications, or ethics—these can build useful skills for many career paths. Talk to your academic advisor about tailoring your courses to what suits you best!

Hope this helps, and good luck with your freshman year at NYU Sophy.
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much! I’ve reached out about more aid but they’ve just told me they can’t do anything about it ☹️☹️. soph
Thank you comment icon Thank you Doc. Frick for your support it means a lot to have you along this journey. Dr H
Thank you comment icon Oh, I totally understand how disappointing it must feel with the financial aid situation right now, but remember Sophy, this is just a part of your journey. Sometimes things can take unexpected turns, and even though they said they can’t adjust now, there are still other ways to explore funding down the line, like scholarships, grants, or work-study programs. You’ve got options, and they’ll open up when the time is right. Remember, you’re stepping into an exciting new chapter at NYU! Freshman year is a time to discover new passions, build lifelong friendships, and take the first steps toward your dreams. Focus on the amazing experiences waiting for you, the new courses, the incredible city of NYC, and all the opportunities to grow, both inside and outside the classroom. Dr H
Thank you comment icon Soph, try to take initiative of the resources NYU offers. The Wasserman Center can help with internships, jobs, and connections, they’re especially helpful if you show up and engage. Since you don’t have much experience yet, start there. Academic Advising in Liberal Studies can help you shape your core around your goals, it’s useful if you advocate for yourself. NYU also has wellness programs and free counseling, though access can be slow sometimes. The truth is, you have to go after these resources, students who ask, connect, and show up get the most out of NYU. And even without Global Studies in your plans, your core is meant for exploration so build it to fit you. And you can always reach out here when you need something. Dr H
