What are some ways to stay focused when studying for hours?

I'm going for my A.A. but my end goal is to be an RN. I'm hoping to test out of pre-requisites and only have to focus on the core classes I need, but that's a lot of studying and I tend to procrastinate a lot or get side-tracked. Any tips?

Hi Autumn! I completely get what you're going through. Let me share a little trick that worked for me. I used to either wait until the last minute to study or spend way too long (like 7-12 hours!) focused on one thing. That's not something I'd suggest now. So, I created a schedule using Google Calendar and a physical planner, setting aside 1-3 hours for studying or homework throughout the week. Plus, I made sure to pick one day just to relax. Chat GPT can also be a great help with managing your time. You've got this!

You may be surprised but studying for hours is not the way…I have always thought if I put countless hours in, I will remeber everything. However, that is not the case. Your brain can be overloaded with information and then all your information will be mixed up.
Here are few things that helped me:
1. Study in same environment you take tests in. No phones, no music, no background noise
2. Take frequent breaks but don’t use electronics, walk around stretch a little.
3. Find someone you can explain your material too. If you do not have siblings FaceTime a classmate and explain what you have learned.
4. Word association and Pneumonic. This Is fantastic way to remember steps, description of things and memorizing boring facts.
5. YouTube. I know I struggled with science and Professor Dave Explains and Amoeba sisters were amazing help!
Feel free to reach out if you need any ideas and do not stress

Blue Shield of California’s Answer

Whenever I have a lot to do (or even when I don't), I like to make myself a to do list. I split it up to what's the most urgent or timely, what's a priority and what can wait until another day. Then I get to work! It feels good to cross things off the list so sometimes I'll start with the smaller (yet urgent) items just to feel like I've accomplished something. It's really easy to get distracted so build in those distraction times when you're planning out your day.

I go for a walk every morning before starting work because I found that moving my body helps my brain work better. I also set daily goals for myself and make a list of my top three things that I need to do. It feels good to be able to mark those things off my list. And listen to music that makes you feel good. During studying or focus time, I like to listen to instrumental music to cancel out distractions.

- As boring as it may sound, I find that getting a good nights sleep and having a daily routine is what keeps me motivated at work.

- I meditate every day for short periods throughout the day. 3 minutes at a time, I take a conscious breath and don't think of anything so that awareness of myself and the moment can rise. it recalibrates the mind.

While I realized you asked this question a while ago, another tip that helped me stay focused while studying nursing was study groups! 1. by having to be in alignment with someone else's schedule it forces you to not wait until the last minute also, it breaks up the monotony of studying alone. Best of luck to you!

I work in the office about 3 days a week. Being in the office itself with so many other people being there. To keep me focused on what I am doing I usually have music playing on my headphones. I can concentrate on what i am doing and it helps to drown out all the other chatter going on around me. If my employees are coming up and asking questions or what not, I will go into the conference room, so it is quiet especially if i have pressing and urgent issues that i need to focus on.

- I have a playlist that I listen to when I need to feel motivated and empowered. I listen to it before I do anything when I need a boost of confidence (e.g. before a big presentation or an interview).
- Personally, I like to doodle or keep things near by I can be creative with in my down time!
- Snacks and fidget toys keep me going
