Susan’s Answer

Hello!

The Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is highly respected in the field of project management. However, many successful project managers have credentials from prestigious universities like Cornell and NYU or have gained skills in change management as consultants. From what I've seen, having a PM or agile certification on your resume can be a great advantage.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Hi. Its nice to hear that you are interested in Hi-tech industry. Relevant degrees to break into this industry would be engineering and more specifically major in Information Technology, Computer Science. This would be a good starting point from where you could build your experience in Project Management skills and get certifications like PMP.

Consider pursuing a certification in Project Management Professional (PMP), Agile, or SAFe. Taking courses in management, business, consulting, or computer science can also be beneficial.

Stacy’s Answer

I've been a project manager for many years across various industries. I studied Management Information Systems because I wanted to focus on IT project management. If you're more interested in engineering, you should pursue that path. In my experience, the degree you choose isn't as crucial as gaining experience and growing in project management. I've met many project managers with different degrees. There are also many training programs and the PMP certification available. My greatest learning came from working with an excellent project manager and observing how he handled projects. This helped me develop my own approach to managing projects.

Rebecca’s Answer

Thank you for your question. I am glad to know that you have interest in Tech and would to become a project manager.
Below are my suggestions :
1. There are plenty of careers on engineering and science, e.g. Mechanical Engineer, Civil Engineer, Electrical & Electronic Engineer, Computer Engineer, Chemist, Zoologist, Pharmacies, etc. You can find out more related careers online. Each of these careers have their own specific domain knowledge.
2. Find out more on these careers and determine what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counsellor, your parents, etc.
4. Shortlist 1-2 careers your would like to pursue.
5. Explore the entry criteria of relevant subjects in colleges
6. Choose project management related course in college
Upon graduation, you can start taking course of Project Management Professional PMP courses and take the exam to obtain qualification. Working experience is required to obtain PMP qualification.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
May Almighty God bless you!
Thank you comment icon Hi Rebecca, this is great general advice but do you have any specifics around how to pick a major? Should they narrow down which sector of tech they want to go into and major in that prior to taking the PMP courses? Gurpreet Lally, Admin

David’s Answer

If you have the means, time, and resources to get a degree from a prestigious university. Do that, only if you sincerely believe you need a title. If you want the cheat codes to life and skip years of studying and debt. I would focus on getting certifications that have to do with your interests. You can realistically grab any book from the university library to get your own education.

If I could do all over again. I would pick two degree paths. Like business and engineering. No less than two career paths to compliment each other. If you want to take a chance, and you boost you IQ through ChatGPT prompting. Choose the cheaper path. AI lacks clever imaginative problem solving. Learn to become one with AI.

Experience is more valuable than theory (no experience). Think like an entrepreneur.
