What jobs can I get that have flexible hours for school?

Hello! I am turning 14 in a month, and would like to know what jobs I can get that would fit around my schedule? I have school from 7:30-2:30. I'm in the Peoria area, thank you!

Hi Vin,

First of all, you need to be aware of and follow the Illinois child labor laws. Between 14 and 16 you can work, but you need a work permit. There are also limitations as to what kinds of jobs you can work and the hours you can work.

Typical jobs for teens with limited hours and some flexibility would be fast food and retail. Parks or sports centers are another option. You can also offer garden services, baby-sitting or pet walking services on your own. If you have any talents like computer skills or arts and crafts, you can sell products. If you are good in certain school subjects, you can offer tutoring for younger kids.

Walk around your neighborhood and malls in your area. Look for "help wanted" signs or just walk in, express your interest and drop a resume. You can also look for jobs on ZipRecruiter, Snagajob or Indeed. Filter for your age group.

You can also start to think about what kind of jobs/careers you would like to pursue when you grow up. Use your teen jobs as an opportunity to get an inside look into certain careers and businesses. Sometimes it even makes more sense to volunteer somewhere (unless of course you absolutely need to make money) for some experience in a possible future career than to work in an unrelated job. If e.g. you think you want to become a veterinarian, starting to volunteer and intern at a vet office will give you insights what the job is really like and get valuable hours of experience that you will need for your vet school application. If you want to own a restaurant or hotel, working any job in the hospitality industry would give you experience in that field.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!

There are several jobs available that a 14-year-old can apply for, typically with the work schedule adjusted to fit around school time.
Some examples include babysitting, pet sitting, lawn mowing, yard work, or snow shoveling for neighbors. You could also tutor younger kids, referee kids' games, deliver the newspaper, or work at a family-owned business.
Always first check with local labor laws and with your parents or guardians in advance. These first jobs can help you develop a sense of responsibility, some money, and some new skills!

I would start with your school. My very first job was a mentor for kids at an elementary school while I was in high school. That program worked with the school and I was able to actually leave school early.

Depending on how much money you are looking to make, don’t underestimate doing little things for neighbors like watching houses, watering plants, taking trash to the curb, etc. Most of those jobs can be done on a timetable of your choosing.

Thank you for your question. I am not sure it allows to work at your age legally in your country. Please check first.
If it is legal, below are my suggestions :
1. Explore any working opportunities in school, e.g. library, administration, etc.
2. Check with your neighbours any assistance would be required. e.g. Babysitting, Gardening, etc.
3. Explore any opportunities in the shops in the neighbourhood, e.g. Groceries, Food Delivery, etc.
4. Explore any part time job opportunities in chain store, e.g. fast food store, supermarkets, etc.
You safety is the most important and make sure the job is suitable for your age. Please discuss with your parents first.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
May Almighty God bless you!
