Should I join my local youth committee?

I am a rising sophomore, and am wondering whether I should join my local youth committee that manages activities. Does it actually help with college applications if I want to go into pre-med?

Patrick’s Answer

Just answer the following questions:

1. Do you know what the local youth committee is doing, and do you really enjoy that work and the time you would spend managing the activities.
2. What other skills can you gain from it? Operational, people skills, public speaking, etc.

If this is something you want to do, and will enjoy doing, you should do it. The benefits of it will be there, but that should not drive your ultimate decision.

Beth’s Answer

Joining your local youth committee can spark additional interests, allow you to meet new and interesting people, and give back to your community. These are all experiences that will help build your confidence going forward, and colleges are looking for well-rounded students no matter what the major. Best of luck and success to you!

Megan’s Answer

It absolutely does! Schools not only look at your academics and grades, but your involvement, particularly in your broader community. A well-rounded person with varied interests and the passion to get involved are more desirable...especially when you can prove that you can balance getting strong grades alongside being involved. Its a critical time management skill!

Jerome’s Answer

I would highly recommend you get involved. You can get great experience while also starting to develop your network. Eventually, you will want references for jobs or for college and this can become a source.
