Hi Miguel
To strengthen your Cal Poly Architecture application, consider joining the AIAS or your school’s Architecture Club to develop design skills, get mentorship, and network with architects — for example, by participating in a park redesign project. Join a Green Building or Sustainability Club to demonstrate your commitment to eco-friendly design, such as creating a recycling station layout for your campus. Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity will give you valuable hands-on construction experience, like helping frame and finish a small home.
You can enhance your portfolio further by joining an Art or 3D Design Club, where you might create a model of a community centre using cardboard or foam board. A Makerspace or Robotics Club will help you gain technical design skills, for instance, using a laser cutter to produce a scale façade model. In addition, attend architecture lectures and expos, enter design competitions like tiny home challenges, and complete online CAD/SketchUp courses to boost your technical proficiency. Finally, take on a personal project — such as building a solar-powered bus shelter model — and document your process to showcase your creativity and initiative.

To strengthen your application, get involved in activities that show creativity, teamwork, and a genuine passion for architecture and design. For example:
*Join architecture or engineering clubs in your school or community
*Participate in design-build competitions or model-making contests
*Volunteer with organizations focused on housing or urban revitalization
*Attend architecture exhibitions, lectures, and industry events
*Keep a sketchbook or portfolio with drawings, models, and creative projects that highlight your process and skills
These experiences will help you build a strong foundation and demonstrate that you already embrace the hands-on mindset they value.
