Good Day Jonathan!

There are very limited jobs for 12-year-olds in San Angelo, TX, due to child labor laws, which restrict work during school hours and limit total work hours. For work to be possible, the child must be at least 14, may not work more than three hours on a school day or 18 hours during a school week, and may not work more than eight hours on a non-school day or 40 hours during a non-school week.

Tech or tutoring from home sounds suitable. You may be a little young but you may be good at searches to access research data.

GOD BLESS!

Hello, Jonathan !

The legal age to work in your state of Texas is 14, but if you are 12, you can work in a parent owned business, a farm, or as a child actor and your pay and hours will have restrictions.

You would not be able to obtain work from a typical employer and the Employment Programs in your state are for students starting at age 14. There is one way that you could possibly obtain some spending money, however.

Learn how to do tag/yard sales. This would be money in hand at the time you do it. Gather items that can be sold at the sale and make flyers and posters of the days and dates and times the yard sales will be held. If you can make something to sell at these sales, that would be great, too. Most towns in Texas do require a fee to have tag or yard sales and that's usually about $5 to $16 depending on the town. I left a link below for you that talks about how to do a yard sale.

Work study programs are not available in Texas at the junior high school level, however, the Texas Workforce Commission does offer youth programs for middle and high school students. Those programs are not for job placement, rather they introduce and teach students about employment, help you explore careers and develop skills. You can ask your guidance counselor or teacher about these programs to learn how employment works.

Since you may not have any work experience, I would advise that you do not do online work or get involved with websites that you may not understand. Try to get your first job on site, in person. This will allow you to learn the people skills and communication skills you will need going forward.

Best wishes to you !

If you’re in San Angelo and looking for tech jobs, even at the beginner level, there are a few good paths you can explore. Many people start with IT help desk or support specialist roles. These jobs involve helping people with computer issues, setting up software, or troubleshooting equipment. San Angelo ISD and local companies often hire for these kinds of positions.

Another option is working as a desktop or field service technician. That means fixing computers, installing networks, or going on-site to help customers with technical problems. Some local shops even hire phone and electronics repair techs, which can be a great entry point if you like working with your hands.

There are also opportunities in data entry, GIS, or junior analyst roles if you’re interested in working with data instead of hardware. On top of that, many remote companies hire entry-level tech support reps, so you can live in San Angelo but work online for bigger organizations.

To get started, focus on building basic computer and troubleshooting skills, and consider earning a certification like CompTIA A+. These show employers you’re serious, even if you don’t have much experience yet. Volunteering or practicing at home like fixing family computers, setting up WiFi, or even learning to build a simple website also helps you stand out.

The key is: you don’t need to be perfect to get your first job. Start small, keep learning, and apply widely. San Angelo may be a smaller city, but there are still plenty of entry-level tech roles, and remote work has made it even easier to break into the field.
