What was the hardest part about clinicals in nursing school? How did you choose your speciality?

I am a senior in high school, and I want to become a nurse practitioner later in life.

I think the thing for me was trying really hard to have all the knowledge from what I read so I can impress my preceptors. My brief piece of advice to you is to make sure you remember that you are there to learn and take advantage of every opportunity to jump in and get the knowledge that goes beyond the textbook.

The Hard Parts (and How to Handle Them):- Clinical placements can be challenging because you’re learning new skills in real situations. It can feel overwhelming at first, but if you go in with an open mind and stay enthusiastic about learning, you’ll be fine.
Other challenges include night shifts, 12-hour days, and quick turnarounds between shifts. Nursing can also be emotionally intense.
Here’s what I found helps:
-Use resources to debrief and talk to mentors or peers when things feel heavy.
-Live a balanced life outside of nursing: eat healthy, stay active, and keep up with friends.
-Understand that people who aren’t nurses often don’t realize how much responsibility and knowledge nursing takes. That’s okay, you´ll find your network that does!


Here’s Why Nursing is Awesome:- Nursing teaches you tons of useful skills and opens up a world of options. Since you’re considering nursing, think about what excites you:
-Do you like fast-paced, high-energy environments where you might see serious injuries and help save lives?
-Or would you rather spend time talking with patients and helping them with everyday tasks?

The great thing is, you don’t have to decide right now. Nursing school gives you the chance to try different areas through clinical placements. Go in with an open mind! You might think you want one thing and end up loving something totally different. For example, I started nursing thinking I wanted to be a midwife, but I discovered my passion in oncology and hematology nursing instead.

Nursing opens so many doors. You can work in hospitals, clinics, schools, research, and even travel the world. Along the way, you’ll gain skills that can lead to other careers if you ever want to branch out. Nursing is also flexible and always changing, which means there are endless opportunities to keep learning and growing throughout your career

Remember nursing is not just one job, it’s a whole world of opportunities. Try different areas, explore, and find what feels right for you! Good luck on your journey, and enjoy! Nursing really is a fantastic career choice.

Honestly, im not sure what was the hardest. I know care plans, pre lab and just plain exhaustion. But its well worth it. I chose geriatrics as my field because I love working with the elderly. I started as a candy striper when I was 13 in a nursing home, thats where I fell in love with the elderly. Its such a special field, dementia, alzheimers and everything else. They have so much knowledge about the past, love hearing about their lives. I wish you luck in anything you do. See if you can shadow someone in something you think you might like.
