Don’s Answer

Hello Sophia,

This is a very interesting question to me because i've never actually met a valedictorian in my life. Being a valedictorian is a big deal in terms of being the person with the highest rank in a graduate class which can be insanely impressive depending on the size of your school. Being a valedictorian does not automatically mean that you that you are going to make millions and be a success in life because nothing is ever guaranteed. Being a valedictorian means that you are able to do well in high school or college (some colleges have valedictorians). Your question really depends on what you think a big deal is and what your specific focus is on. Hope this helps!

David’s Answer

Getting good grades in school will help you achieve whatever goals you have and having the best grades in your HS class is an impressive accomplishment. That said, being a valedictorian can be as much about how well other people in your school do as it is about how well you do. Additionally, your grades are only one aspect of what shows up on a college or job application. If you decide to pursue being a valedictorian and do not participate in any extracurricular activities to give you more time to study, that would likely lead to you not having a well rounded college application compared to a classmate that still received excellent grades but also participated in other activities as well. So the answer to your question depends on what you would have to give up in order to try to be Valedictorian.

Hello, Sophia !

Yes, getting to be Valedictorian of your High School is a really big deal, an honor that is chosen by high school administrators, not planned for and for no other reason than the student has achieved outstanding grades in Advanced Placement or other advanced courses with a perfect GPA. Not everything in High School determines what job or career you will have, employment is a lot more than that. It's an honor for the moment and can mean something when applying to colleges.

To have been Valedictorian, colleges will make the assumption that the student is a high achiever, has a brilliant mind, is focused and will do well at their college and be an asset to their campus. So for the consideration of being accepted to college, it can be a huge plus. Colleges also look at other things, too, but academic achievement is always very important to colleges.

If a person was Valedictorian of their high school, I think it's perfectly okay to write it on a resume for jobs. The name of the high school and location as well as that they got a high school diploma and Valedictorian of Class of what year. At some point in their adulthood, I would say not to include the High School information, but to start out, it would show employers that the applicant is a good learner, has developed skills and knowledge and can take direction.

Students really never set out to get Valedictorian because you don't apply for it. It's all about getting the best grades in the hardest classes in high school all four years. It's something that the most advanced student won't even know if they'd get because it's more like awarded to the person and there's no way to know which smart kid will be chosen. Instead of thinking about striving for Valedictorian, concentrate on getting good grades and doing volunteer work in a field of your interest. Students that have medium and high grades get accepted to college and even students with fair grades, but something that you can't apply for is not useful to you. You would have to have already had flawless grades and take AP classes or International Baccalaureate classes or Honors classes all four years.

My advice is to focus on careers, exploring which ones you are interested in and planning a path for that if you are concerned about what you do mattering to employers. No one can predict what your professional path will be, so you'll be in charge of how it goes, Valedictorian or not.

I hope this clarifies it for you and I wish you all the best !

Karin’s Answer

Hi Sophia,

The valedictorian is usually the top student in a year, i.e. the student with the highest GPA upon graduation. So, yes, it is a big deal. When you apply to university, they don't only look at your GPA, they look at the stats of the school you come from and compare you to your peers at the same school.

If you go to a school that does not offer as many opportunities and support you can set yourself apart by being the "best" under the circumstances of that school. If on the other hand you go to a high-performing school, you'll have overall more opportunities and support, but it might be very difficult to achieve "best". The idea is to level the playing field a bit.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!
