Hello Maribel,

After high school, there will be many steps for you to become a probation officer. You will need to get a bachelors degree in a major related to that field like criminal justice for example, you need to be at least 21 years, you need to gain experience, pass exams, complete trainings, get certified and also complete many more steps. It can be a lot to complete but if this is what you want to do, I would say go for it. Hope this helps and best of luck when it comes to being a probation officer!

I’m not sure about San Jose, but most California counties require probation officers to have a four-year college degree to become eligible for employment. It is one of the few law enforcement agencies that require a bachelors degree, primarily because probation officers work directly with the courts. I believe most counties do not require a criminal justice degree per se, but having a strong educational foundation in legal procedure or professional writing would be advantageous. Before you commit yourself to four years of college, I would strongly recommend contacting your local probation department and getting the straight facts from active officers. I spent 25 years as a probation officer and didn’t always enjoy all of my assignments. I also became very jaded and suspicious of people. Working with the criminal element has its rewards, but it can also change how you see the world; and not always for the good. Good luck.
