What is the importance of choosing a specific major when it comes to larger career fields?

I am personally interested in anything related to documentary, journalism, creative writing, and English, but don't know what job I want yet. What do you suggest I pick for my major in order to allow for the largest possible career options down the road? I know a lot of people end up doing things unrelated to their major, so how do I know what's the right pick.

Hi Emma, you're right, there are tons of people (me included) who major in one thing and end up doing something else. I would encourage you, though, that a more general major can be an asset to you even if you're outside the career field you land in. For example, an English major could help with a career in journalism, marketing, public relations, teaching, law or any host of other careers. Even if you believe you know what you want to do, often times when you start doing that you see the bad and ugly along with the good and realize that may not be the best fit for you. Best of luck!

Hey Emma! This is a great question. If you know the general direction of your passion, then you probably have narrowed down the list of majors already. You want to make sure that the major you do pick can teach you transferable skills which will allow you to pursue many types of careers at the end of the day. For example, a creative writing major may allow you to pursue a literary career where you can author novels or you could use those skills to be a screenwriter for movies or TV shows. If you want to supplement your major, I would suggest minoring or double majoring in fields like business or marketing which could give you additional skills that would be helpful down the line. For example, English and marketing would be a strong combination as many marketing agencies are looking for hires with English major backgrounds. I would suggest looking at people on LinkedIn (or company websites) that have similar jobs that you would like to pursue and looking at what they majored in! That may help you decide.
