What skill ended up being more important in your career than you expected?

I am currently a senior at Baruch College studying Advertising and Marketing Communications. I'm interested in doing social media/digital marketing and I want to know what important skills I should work on that tend to be overlooked or not focused on enough!

Paul’s Answer

Writing skills, without a doubt.

Not many people focus on writing, and this format of communications, but I believe that writing skills are critical for success.

Writing skills are important because they are crucial for effective communication, they also are important in developing critical thinking, and are mandatory for academic and professional success.

Strong writing allows you to clearly convey ideas, persuade others, and present information logically, which is valuable in everything from writing college applications to drafting professional business emails.

For students entering the social media field, I would advise spending time improving your communication skills along with your technical skills. Practice presenting your ideas, writing clearly, and listening carefully. These abilities will help you stand out.

One skill that is often overlooked is storytelling. On social media, you're not just sharing information, you're telling stories that connect with people. Learning how to turn ideas into simple, interesting stories can make your posts, videos, or blogs more engaging. Being able to explain something complicated in a way that's easy to understand will set you apart.

Adaptability is also very important. Social media trends, algorithms, and audience interests change quickly. You need to be able to adjust your content and strategy while explaining your ideas clearly to your clients. If you can communicate changes confidently, it builds trust and makes collaboration much smoother.

Another skill to focus on is relationship building. Social media is not just about creating content, it's about connecting with people. Being able to communicate well helps you work with teammates, mentors, influencers, and clients. These connections can open doors for learning, collaboration, and even future job opportunities.
