Hello Elise,
Congrats on getting accepted to Bowling green University! Your question is a great question and the fact you want to be the best teacher for not just yourself but more importantly your students. My advice to is to listen, treat/talk to them as your equal and not as babies, and know your education so you can teach them everything you’ve learned in your education. Best of luck!

Hi Elise. As a former school teacher, my biggest piece of advice is this: stay open to learning. Teaching is a profession that is always changing, and the most impactful teachers are the ones who continue growing throughout their entire careers.
When you begin your studies at Bowling Green State University, you will take courses in teaching methods, child development, and classroom management. These classes will give you a strong foundation, but what matters most is your attitude toward learning. Take each class seriously, participate fully, and never be afraid to ask questions. Your professors have years of experience, and many of them have taught in real classrooms. Connecting with them, seeking their guidance, and learning from their stories will help you grow into a confident and knowledgeable teacher.
Another important part of being an impactful teacher is forming strong, caring relationships with your students. Young children especially need to feel safe, understood, and encouraged. When students know their teacher believes in them, they become more willing to take risks, ask questions, and try their best. In your future classroom, make it your mission to listen to your students and pay attention to their individual strengths and challenges. Show patience when they struggle, celebrate their small victories, and treat each child with kindness. As a former teacher, I saw how powerful these relationships can be. Sometimes the simple act of showing a child that you care can change their entire school experience and help them grow in ways they never thought possible.
Creativity and flexibility are also essential qualities that will help you stand out as a teacher. Young children learn best when they are actively engaged, using their senses, and exploring the world around them. This means your lessons should include movement, hands-on activities, stories, art, and playful learning.
When you bring energy and excitement into your classroom, your students will feel it and they will remember you for making learning joyful and meaningful. All the best.
