What's some good resources for people wanting to get into forestry.?

Working on getting a degree in Geography, but occasionally forestry has popped up in the back of my mind as a career. Anyone have any recommendations on what forestry is like and how it would be to switch degrees.

Glenn’s Answer

I have done a lot of work In geography and just a little bit In forestry. There of course is a lot of overlap. If you've been doing work in Remote Sensing and GIS, there's innumerable applications of these technologies in forestry. If you are interested In doing international stuff, there's a lot of things you could do around tropical deforestation. Remote sensing is now quite good at measuring deforestation. Where work is needed is combining field work with desktop and computer modeling work. For example. to go beyond deforestation, you might look at pests and diseases that affect forests. We need to be able to combine field work where you identify these pests and diseases. What are the consequences of that as seen in the remote sensing imagery. What is the likely spread of pests and diseases given climate, climate change, and other geophysical factors. How do these patterns match with the known location of forests? Check out Global Forest Watch online. Also, there is a new paper in Nature about using AI to measure forest extent.

Glenn recommends the following next steps:

Go to university and study both geography and foresty, maybe with a double major.
