Hello Yasmin! Wow—optometry is a great field, and it’s nice that you’ve had a passion for it since second grade. Regarding your concern about AI and how it will affect the field of optometry, I can confidently say that it is very unlikely for AI to replace optometrists. AI is already being used to assist with the early detection of eye diseases such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. However, that doesn’t mean it will eliminate doctors completely.
In other words, AI will make optometry more efficient and data-driven, but it won’t replace the human side of care. In fact, it may make the profession even more impactful by allowing optometrists to catch issues earlier and improve patient outcomes. Advancements in technology are not always a bad thing—they are often tools that make your work easier and more efficient while you are still diagnosing patients, prescribing medication, and making important decisions.
At the same time, AI is still just a tool and cannot fully think or act like a human. Many patients may feel uncertain about relying on AI for diagnosis or treatment. Doctors are highly valued and play a significant role in people’s lives, so I wouldn’t worry too much about AI affecting the field you are passionate about. Keep going, and I wish you a successful journey in optometry!

Hi Yasmin,
Passion is one of the most important aspect for any profession.
The AI is really at the beginning of its revolution. I work with AI and I can tell you the Heathcare is one of the biggest beneficiary of it, and I believe for Optometry will not be any different.
If you can do some research on what AI is already doing in on the eye care and medical procedures, in terms of super advancing imaging, faster diagnostics, and dta analysis for preventive healthcare, you might very excited of what the future holds for your profession.
I would suggest to starting voluteering with any Heath Care association with are working already with AI to starting to get the "feeling" on what you can do by yourself once you graduate.
