Jennifer’s Answer

Hi Adyanna,
I taught for 6 years before moving into a role that is more flexible for my family life. During those 6 years, I worked to create a safe space for all students, and built trust with those students so that they had a trusted adult to talk to. I taught students with exceptional needs, because I felt the impact would be greatest.

Teaching gave me more patience, understanding, and empathy with each year. I learned a lot about state and federal laws regarding students with exceptional needs, and I use that knowledge today to help my friends and family advocate for their own children.

It is important to note that there will be hard days. Sometimes it feels like the impact is minimal, so it's important to reflect and check-in with yourself throughout the year.

Good luck!

Jennifer recommends the following next steps:

For next steps, if you haven't already - look into teacher education programs (Bachelor degrees) for your desired specialty (math, English, science, etc.)
Then look into the state requirements for teacher certifications within your state.

Jerome’s Answer

I am not a traditional teacher, but I do a lot of training and speeches across the United States. I had one for over 1300 students earlier this year. After telling my story, the number of students that came up to meet me and to tell me their story was overwhelming in a great way. The impact you can have is almost incalculable.

I think back to a couple teachers I had. Once you truly gave me a passion for learning and exploring. Teaching can be difficult, but the right teachers can also have a huge impact on the lives around them.
