What are the main things that scholarship judges look for in essays or extracurriculars?
I am a high school senior who has already been accepted by my first choice college and would like advice regarding scholarships.

Hi Austin!
Congratulations on acceptance to your first choice school!
For scholarship essays, here are a few things I found that scholarship committees often look for:
- A compelling personal story that shows your authenticity. This can be about a challenge, something you learned, or how impacted your goals, how you view things, or in other ways. You want to use examples that show the impact.
- Talk about your future goals and how the scholarship will help you. This can be what career you want have or how you want to make an impact in the world.
- Make a connection between your story and the mission of the scholarship or the organization awarding it.
- Make sure your writing is solid. There should be a clear structure to your essay and you want to write in your voice but make sure your spelling and grammar are on point.
- For extracurriculars, if you can show leadership, that is great. For example, starting an organization or leading an event shows initiative. Also make your extracurricular activities demonstrate commitment with your involvement. Also, many scholarship committees value community service activities.
If you can, have someone read your essay before submission to get feedback.
Wishing you much success in school!
