What would be best?

I have an out-of-state college that’s interested in recruiting me, but their tuition is way out of my parents’ budget. My mom suggested that I take a year and go to a Cal State since it’s more affordable, and take a year off from soccer to try and get recruited by a Cal State during that time. What should I do?

Hello, Ashley !

If you would attend a California State University for a year, why would you need to be "recruited" to a California State University if you'd be already attending one for a year ? You didn't mention your career goal, Major and where Soccer fits in with your academic or career plan. And are you saying "recruiting" in regards to Soccer ?

My personal advice is, since the other college is not affordable, it would be advantageous to go to a California State University which is much more affordable. The two California State University campuses that offer a very strong, competitive Soccer team experience would be California State University, Fullerton and California State University, Northridge. As you probably know, Fullerton is a tad bit closer to L.A. being 22 miles away and Northridge is not too much farther at 28 miles from you. So you have two colleges to choose from. Consider what your Major will be and what is more important, getting your degree for a specific career or being on a Soccer Team, or would Athletics be your Major? Both Fullerton and Northridge have varsity athletic teams and development camps despite not offering an actual course in soccer.

It doesn't look like you'd have to quit soccer for a year if you chose Fullerton or Northridge. Register for a tour at both universities and check out the departments for your major and the sports departments. See which University you like better.

Keep in mind that even at a California State University, you can apply for Federal Student Financial Aid and various specific and general Scholarships from donors not at the university.

So talk this all over with your parents and see what they say. It sure will be more affordable and closer for you if you decide to go to and continue with CSU Fullerton or CSU Northridge !

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !

If the other school is looking to recruit you, I’d ask for financial support. They may be able to offset the fees in some way. You do want to be mindful of college cost and student loans. I know some people paying over $1,000 per month to repay loans, early in life that can have a huge impact on finances.
