What is the best way to approach and get internships in college?
I am currently an 18 year old in high school. I am planning on attending the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota Twin-Cities, and I have been told there are many internships! My main worry is how I approach the internships, for example, I wonder the best way to find internships and how I can find good quality internships.

Hi Daniel. When you arrive at college, you can visit your school's career center. They can help you make a strong resume, write good cover letters, and practice interviews. They usually have job boards where companies post internship openings. Career centers also host career fairs and events where you can meet employers in person. Going to these events early, even as a freshman, helps you learn what companies look for and lets you practice talking to recruiters.
Another important step is networking, which simply means building connections with people who can help you learn about opportunities. You can join student clubs related to business, marketing, finance, or entrepreneurship. These groups often bring in guest speakers, alumni, or company representatives. By participating, you'll meet people who can give advice or even recommend you for internships.
You should also build experience before aiming for big internships. During your first year, you might not get the most competitive roles yet, but you can still gain useful skills through part-time jobs, volunteer work, leadership positions, or small projects. Employers like students who take initiative and show they're willing to learn.
When searching for good-quality internships, don't rely on just one website. You may use several sources including LinkedIn and company career pages. If you're unsure whether an internship is valuable, you can research the company online or ask a career advisor for guidance.
Most importantly, start early, apply to many places, and don't worry if you get rejected sometimes. Rejection is normal and happens to everyone. With steady effort and a positive attitude, you'll be able to find opportunities that help you grow and prepare you for your future career. All the best.
