What kind of activities should I participate in to have a good resume for a well-paying job after graduation in the Finance field?

As a freshman in college, I want to be prepared from the start and build a good resume starting now.

Hi Camila. You need to prioritize your academic performance. To get a solid foundation in finance, you should focus on doing well in your core courses like finance, accounting, economics, and math. A good GPA will make a big difference when employers look at your resume.

Next, you need to gain real-world experience. Internships are one of the best ways to build a resume that will catch the attention of hiring managers. You can look for finance-related internships, even if the internship is unpaid or part-time, as it can provide valuable experience that helps you understand the finance industry better. Whether it's in financial analysis, investment banking, or corporate finance, any hands-on experience you gain will help you build your skills and make connections in the industry.

Networking is another important part of your journey. You'll want to start building connections with professionals in the finance field early on. You can attend career fairs, industry events, and conferences related to finance. These events are great opportunities to learn from people who are already working in finance and to hear about job opportunities.

It's also essential to work on both technical and soft skills. In the finance world, being good with numbers and financial software is a must. I was a finance major. I think the most important keys to success are:
- Relationship building. Network with professionals in your sphere. Ask professors to connect you to contacts. Build relationships with your classmates, you never know when you may work together in the future.
- Find meaningful internships. It doesn't have to be at the big companies, my first internship was a one-man shop accounting company and I was his secretary. He had great contacts and set me on a path to success.
- Be open to opportunities. I ended up in roles I could never have imagined because I said yes to projects or opportunities when asked.
- Build your workplace etiquette. Attend things you RSVP to. Show up in the office to meet people and build relationships. Respond to emails timely. Don't be afraid to pick up the phone (instead of always text/email/ping).
