Hello, Isaiah !
Commercial Music is a good Major and a Degree for it will prepare you for a variety of media specifically for commercial purposes, such as advertising, film, television, video games, and other media. You're probably asking about the stability factor because you probably already realize that you won't know how your career will go until you are in college and after you graduate. You very well may obtain projects for pay while you are a student.
During college (is it Southeastern University in Lakeland ?) you will develop a natural sense of the way the career is and the places that you can target for work. Nearby where you'd be attending college if it is Southeastern U., you'd not be far from Orlando where there are studios, advertising agencies and film production. Explore the town you'll be studying in for these companies, too.
Knowing how to start a career in the creative fields is a gradual process and college may just be the best way to do it because of all the information and support included in the academics. Your professors and fellow students will share a lot with you and what you'll need to do is focus on learning and do a lot of projects. Make very strong connections in your Commercial Music Department. If you do not worry about your future career, you will be open to enjoying the journey towards it.
None of us know how our career will be four years before we start. I took a lot of chances, chances that ended up being beneficial. Go with your instincts and your passion. You can do it
Once you have the equipment or a studio to record in, and feel that you are ready for work, you can use some resources for commercial music gigs. The Sync Report is a comprehensive directory that lists music supervisors and advertising agency contacts who license indie songs for commercial use. SongwriterUniverse offers the Film and Television Music Monthly, a detailed directory listing movie studios, TV networks, production companies, music supervisors, composers, music clearance companies, libraries, and other key contacts essential for placing music in commercial media. Also use ROSTR, MusicFibre, and The Music Business Association. It seems as though you can freelance with this career, too.
So right now, the focus would be on preparing for college and possibly applying for some scholarships to help out with college expenses. Take things a step at a time. Scholarships that you can apply for are The National Association of Music Merchants, The Music Forward Program, the John Lennon Scholarships that Yoko Ono gives, and the Gibson Musical Instruments scholarship. You can also apply for many scholarships outside of the Major Category.
So live in the present and enjoy the academic process. Don't let anything stop you. It will take lots of networking, creating music and being brave but people have done it and so can you !
I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
